Reviewing Retail Display Placement in Real-World Environments

HV07 – Field Observation Review & Pattern Identification
Digital displays are often assessed by whether they are easy to see. In practice, visibility is only one part of the picture. How customers enter, move through, and pause within a space can affect the opportunity they have to notice a display.
During HV06, NexGen AI Showcase applied its field validation framework in everyday retail environments. The observations covered displays positioned near store entrances, main walkways, storefronts, interior retail spaces, and waiting areas.
HV07 takes the next step by reviewing these observations through a consistent structure. The purpose is to identify conditions that appear across multiple locations and determine which areas require closer comparison.
Why Placement Context Matters
A display does not operate separately from its surroundings. Viewing distance, nearby activity, customer movement, physical obstructions, and competing visual elements can all affect how it is experienced.
At store entrances, customers may have a clear view of a display while also focusing on entering, exiting, or navigating the space. Displays along main walkways may have broad visibility, but the available viewing time can be brief. Screens near seating or waiting areas may provide a longer viewing opportunity under different traffic conditions.
Rather than ranking these placements at this stage, HV07 considers the type of viewing opportunity each environment creates.
Visibility and Viewing Opportunity
A display can be visible without receiving sustained attention. For this reason, the review distinguishes general visibility from the amount of time and opportunity available for viewing.
The observations include visible behaviours such as reduced walking speed, temporary stopping, movement toward a display, and changes in direction or position.
These behaviours do not explain why a customer responded in a particular way, nor do they confirm engagement or display performance. They provide a practical and consistent way to document what can be observed in the field.
Reviewing Recurring Conditions
The field observations are being organized according to display placement, customer movement, and environmental context. Similar conditions can then be reviewed across more than one retail location.
Recurring situations may help identify which environments provide a clearer opportunity for customers to notice a display. They may also highlight conditions that limit viewing, such as fast movement, divided attention, physical obstructions, or competing visuals.
Differences between locations are equally useful. They can reveal where the current observation framework requires refinement or where additional field review may be needed.
Preparing for the Next Stage
HV07 is based on observations conducted in existing retail environments rather than controlled testing or statistical measurement. Any patterns identified during this stage will therefore remain directional.
The review will provide a structured classification of the HV06 observations and help define the placement conditions that should be compared more closely during HV08.
The next stage will examine selected environments, including store entrances, main walkways, storefront displays, interior placements, and waiting areas. This will provide a clearer basis for understanding how retail placement conditions may influence customer viewing opportunities.
