Comparing Retail Display Placement Conditions in Real-World Environments

HV08 – Retail Placement Condition Comparison

The placement of a digital display shapes more than its visibility. It also affects how customers encounter the screen, how long it remains within view, and what other activities compete for their attention.

During HV07, NexGen AI Showcase reviewed field observations from different retail environments and identified recurring conditions related to placement, customer movement, and the surrounding environment.

HV08 moves this work into a structured comparison. Displays located at store entrances, along main walkways, in storefronts, within interior retail spaces, and near waiting areas are being reviewed using a common set of criteria.

A Consistent Basis for Comparison

Each placement condition is reviewed across four areas:

  • Display visibility

  • Customer movement

  • Time available for viewing

  • Environmental context

Applying the same criteria creates a clearer basis for comparing how displays function within different retail settings.

The objective is not to identify one placement that will work best in every location. Retail environments vary in layout, traffic patterns, customer activity, and surrounding visual elements. Each placement must therefore be considered within the context in which it operates.

How Placement Conditions Differ

Store entrances can provide immediate visibility, although customer attention may be divided between the display, navigation, and entry or exit activity.

Main walkways can expose a display to a wider range of passing customers, but the viewing window may be brief.

Storefront and window-facing displays can be visible from outside or across a retail space. Distance, viewing angle, reflections, merchandise, and surrounding visual elements may all influence the viewing conditions.

Interior displays can create a closer connection to products and the in-store experience. Their visibility, however, may depend on store layout, customer activity, and potential obstructions.

Waiting and seating areas may allow more time for viewing, although exposure is generally limited to customers using that particular area.

Visibility and Available Viewing Time

A display can be easy to see without remaining in view long enough to receive sustained attention.

For example, a screen along a busy walkway may be highly visible but remain within a customer’s field of view for only a short time. A display in a waiting area may reach fewer customers while providing a longer opportunity for viewing.

HV08 considers visibility and available viewing time together rather than using visibility alone to assess a placement condition.

The Role of the Surrounding Environment

Viewing distance, screen angle, physical obstructions, lighting, reflections, nearby activity, and competing visuals can all influence how a display is experienced within a retail setting.

Customer movement is also part of the comparison. Walking speed, traffic direction, entry and exit patterns, temporary stopping, and waiting activity can affect the opportunity to notice and view a screen.

As these conditions may vary by location and observation period, the comparison remains specific to the retail environments reviewed.

Preparing for Customer Attention Assessment

HV08 will produce a structured comparison of the practical strengths and limitations associated with each placement condition.

The review does not include controlled experiments, customer interviews, automated tracking, or statistical performance measurement. The findings will therefore remain descriptive and directional rather than confirm that one placement is consistently more effective than another.

The comparison will also define the conditions to be examined during HV09, which will focus more closely on how placement, customer movement, and environmental context may create opportunities for customer attention.
